As time has progressed, the meaning behind theater has shifted to adapt with society appropriately. Different genres of theater have been emerging all throughout history and continue to emerge even today. There are so many different genres of theatre that any individual can relate to it. One can easily recall the major genres of theatre: drama, comedy, musicals. However, it is the sub-divisions within these major genres that evoke unique performances and experiences. One branch of the musical genre, the rock musical, is simply a†¦show more content†¦The history of the United States from 1980–1991 illustrates that this was a time when there was economic distress, high unemployment, and was the period when chronic homelessness became a modern problem. It is largely in these urban areas that homelessness became widespread and reached unprecedented numbers. RENT tells the story of this type of poverty and helplessness. Multiple characters are jobless, barely making ends meet, and are unable to pay the rent to remain off the streets. During the show’s climax, the group is actually evicted from their residence building and is forced to break in, only to find all their belongings to be removed. There are multiple similarities that transcend throughout both these rock musicals, even though they were performed roughly thirty years apart. Apart from the same genre of theatre, one similarity between Hair and RENT is the setting. Both plays take place in New York City, particularly in the East Village. Both productions celebrate the counterculture of their day and promote individuality and eccentricity. These productions promote the notion that there is nothing wrong with striving to go against the grain, be your own person, and not worry about the stereotype society will put on you. As a result, both casts in the productions live the same type of free-spirited bohemian lifestyle.
